That being said, there are certain situations where merbau may be the better option. For example, if you are looking for a timber with a reddish hue, then merbau would be a better choice – as Spotted Gum has more of a brownish tone.

Generally speaking, budget a minimum of $180/m² for a basic deck constructed out of treated pine, or up to $350/m² or more for decks made from more premium timbers such as merbau. If you want an elaborate curved or wraparound deck, expect to pay even more. Labour costs will typically add an additional $50-75/m² to the cost of the decking itself.
