As a general rule, Spotted Gum is better than merbau. It is more durable and stable, making it ideal for outdoor use in harsh environments. Additionally, Spotted Gum has a higher resistance to moisture, rot, and termites – meaning it will better withstand the elements over time. The timber’s distinctive grain patterns and Colour variation also give it added appeal.

That being said, there are certain situations where merbau may be the better option. For example, if you are looking for a timber with a reddish hue, then merbau would be a better choice – as Spotted Gum has more of a brownish tone.

Decking prices in Australia vary depending on the type of timber you choose, the size and shape of your deck, and the level of labour involved. Generally speaking, budget a minimum of $180/m² for a basic deck constructed out of treated pine, or up to $350/m² or more for decks made from more premium timbers such as merbau. If you want an elaborate curved or wraparound deck, expect to pay even more. Labour costs will typically add an additional $50-75/m² to the cost of the decking itself.
